Pastor’s Reflection – Jesus’ Epiphany and Ours

I’m writing this on the day after the birth of Ryan James Jacobson, our newest grandchild and the first from Sheri’s youngest son Ron and his wife Rebecca. His name was carefully chosen. It was discussed and debated and when he was born it was lovingly bestowed. This was done according to the customs of our times. Years earlier and according to the custom of those times Mary and Joseph brought their new child to be circumcised and named eight days after he was born. An event that was not the usual way things happened also occurred in the young life of Mary’s son, Jesus. Three Magi came from Persia. They had followed a star that they believed to be the sign of the birth of a new king. So, among the first people to recognize Jesus for the real one who would set the world right were a group on Gentiles from a far off country. Thanks be to God that wise men everywhere sought Jesus and wise people still do. The Christian Church has celebrated this event throughout history, we call it Epiphany.
The word epiphany means a sudden realization of the truth. I don’t expect Magi to arrive to bring gifts to Ryan James, but I am praying today that God will gift him with many epiphanies in his life and that he will grow to be a wise man indeed. I hope he will be among the cohort who finally complete the bringing of the kingdom of peace in this world that sometimes seems so far from the Word of God.
I am praying that we as a church in Custer and in the world will also grow wise through this season of Epiphany. Let us learn in this time the age old wisdom that drew people to the Prince of Peace, the King of Love years ago.
Blessings and Peace throughout 2012 and beyond,

Pastor Bill
